Pre weathered steel, also known as Corten steel before full oxidation, has a distinct appearance prior to developing the characteristic red rust patina. Understanding this initial stage is important for design planning and installation in landscaping or architectural projects.

Color of Corten Steel Before Rusting

Before oxidation begins, Corten steel typically has a dark metallic appearance, which may vary slightly depending on processing and storage conditions:

• Dark gray to bluish-gray

• Black or dark brown tones (due to mill scale or surface treatment)

• Slight metallic sheen when new

This initial color is similar to standard carbon steel, without the warm rust tones associated with weathered steel.

Surface Condition and Texture

In its pre-weathered state, the steel surface usually shows:

• Smooth or slightly rough texture depending on rolling process

• Presence of mill scale (a thin oxide layer formed during hot rolling)

• Possible oil or protective film applied during storage and transportation

• Clean edges and uniform surface before exposure

Early Stage of Oxidation

Once exposed to air and moisture, the steel begins transitioning from its original appearance:

1. Initial darkening

   • Surface may become slightly dull or uneven

2. Light orange spots

   • Small areas of oxidation begin to appear

3. Gradual color shift

   • Changes from gray/black to orange-brown tones

This phase is uneven and transitional before the final patina stabilizes.
