50Mn18Cr4V is one of the most widely used high-strength non-magnetic steels, ideal for applications requiring minimal magnetic interference. At a magnetic field strength of 16,000 A/m (200 Oersteds), its magnetic permeability (μ) remains ≤ 1.319 × 10⁻⁶ H/m (approximately 1.05 µ₀), significantly lower than that of standard austenitic stainless steel, which measures around 1.339 × 10⁻⁶ H/m (1.1 µ₀). Although cold-working austenitic stainless steel introduces slight magnetism, 50Mn18Cr4V remains effectively non-magnetic under similar conditions.
This alloy belongs to the Fe-Mn-Al-C austenitic steel family, where its chemical composition provides exceptional electromagnetic stability, low magnetic permeability, high resistivity, and minimal eddy current loss—making it ideal for use in large and medium-sized transformers, electromagnets, generator retaining rings, and other non-magnetic structural components. Its stable microstructure and excellent mechanical properties ensure durability in demanding industrial environments.
