1. What is Manganese Steel?

Manganese steel, also known as high manganese steel, is used in harsh conditions involving impact, extrusion, and material wear. The primary forms of damage include wear, partial fracture, and deformation.

Types of Wear:

  • Friction Wear: Occurs between moving metal components.
  • Abrasive Wear: Caused by metal or non-metal materials striking the surface.
  • Erosion Wear: Results from contact with flowing gas or liquid.

Wear-resistant steel’s durability depends on its material composition and working conditions. Cast wear-resistant steel is primarily austenitic manganese steel. Under certain conditions, low-alloy steel with proper heat treatment also provides good performance. Graphite steel is used for lubrication in friction-based applications.

2. High Manganese Steel

High manganese steel is a common wear-resistant steel with an austenite plus carbide structure. After water quenching at approximately 1000°C, it transforms into a single austenite or austenite with minimal carbide, enhancing toughness. This process is called water-toughening treatment.

Key Feature:

  • Under strong impact and extrusion, the surface undergoes work hardening, while the core retains toughness and plasticity. This gives it superior wear resistance compared to other materials.
  • However, its wear resistance is effective only when work hardening occurs.

As a leading High Manganese Steel Supplier in China, we provide high-quality Mn13 and X120Mn12 grades, known for their superior wear-resistant steel plate properties.

3. Chemical and Mechanical Properties

  • Appearance: Milky white, smooth, and shiny when fractured.
  • Spark Test: Star-shaped bursts with many yellow, fine pollen-like sparks.
  • Key Properties:
    • High strength and hardness.
    • Excellent wear and impact resistance.
    • High-temperature durability.
    • Low crushing rate.

4. Physical Properties

Due to work hardening, high manganese steel is difficult to process. Castings should include holes and grooves where needed. However, machining is possible with proper tool dressing after one-time feed processing. Any necessary machining should account for the work-hardening layer.

5. Welding Performance

  • When reheated, high manganese steel develops a brittle carbide precipitation zone between 250°C and 800°C.
  • Castings contain network carbides and casting stress, reducing weldability.
  • To weld, defects must be repaired after water toughening treatment, followed by rapid cooling.
  • Best Practices:
    • Use a low current and perform discontinuous welding.
    • Apply water cooling during welding to minimize the heat-affected zone.
    • Use high manganese steel or austenitic stainless steel welding rods.
    • Remove the work-hardened layer before welding.

6. Processing of High Manganese Steel

  • The main components are Fe, Mn (10%-14%), and C (1%-1.4%).
  • Production involves ferromanganese, broken electrode carbon, and steel rods.
  • The melting process occurs under a protective covering agent to prevent surface agitation.

7. Identifying Manganese Steel and Iron

A spark test is used for identification.

Method:

  1. Use a grinding wheel with an alumina grinding disc.
  2. Grind both the test workpiece and a standard sample to compare sparks.
  3. If no sample is available:
    • Manganese Steel: Feels hard, produces white/yellow sparks with many fine bursts.
    • Industrial Pure Iron: Feels soft, generates long, wheat-yellow sparks with no bursts.
    • Cast Iron/Pig Iron: Produces short, dark yellow to red sparks with fragmented patterns.

As carbon content increases, sparks change from dark to bright and back to dark. Different alloy elements also create unique spark patterns, allowing accurate identification through experience.
