Overview of Manganese Steel
Manganese steel, often referred to as hard manganese steel, exhibits significant enhancements in tensile strength and hardness after being cold-worked. This process greatly improves wear resistance while maintaining high durability. The material can be bent, flanged, and pierced due to its strong properties. However, cutting with hard metal tools at room temperature is limited.
Typical Uses of Manganese Steel
Manganese steel is commonly used in applications involving heavy percussion and impact stress, including:

Welding Manganese Steel
Manganese steel can be welded using both electrical and autogenous methods. Electrical welding is preferred to prevent the loss of manganese and carbon, which can occur during autogenous welding. When using shielded electrodes, it is recommended to choose those with 0.8% to 1.0% carbon and 15% to 18% manganese. Note that the wear resistance at the weld seam is slightly lower than in the base material.
