X120Mn12 Manganese Steel Tips

X120Mn12 Manganese Steel Overview

Introduction to X120Mn12 Manganese Steel
X120Mn12 manganese steel, also known as hard manganese steel or manganese hard steel, significantly enhances its original low tensile strength and hardness through intensive work hardening. This process occurs in the quenched state, improving wear resistance without compromising its high initial toughness. The steel’s work-hardened surface greatly increases its resistance to wear, making it ideal for applications involving shock and impact loads. The steel is also suitable for bending, flanging, and punching due to its toughness. However, the use of carbide tools at room temperature for processing is limited.

Applications of X120Mn12 Manganese Steel Sheet
X120Mn12 manganese steel sheet is commonly used in various heavy-duty applications, including:

  • Sandblasting machine hangers
  • Crushing jaws and jaw inserts
  • Excavator bolts and bushings
  • Clamping teeth
  • Impact elements in impact and centrifugal mills
  • Safety technology products such as protective grilles, doors, cladding, and safety plates

The material is predominantly employed in industries where large shock and impact forces are encountered.

Welding X120Mn12 Steel Sheet
X120Mn12 steel sheet can be welded using both electric and autogenous methods. However, autogenous welding may lead to the loss of manganese and carbon, which is why electric welding is preferred. For electric welding, electrodes with 0.8% – 1.0% carbon and 15% – 18% manganese content are recommended. It is important to note that the weld’s wear resistance is slightly lower than the material itself.

X120Mn12 (1.3401) Heat Treatment
X120Mn12 is a heat-treatable, austenitic manganese steel with a high manganese content. This steel achieves its wear resistance through the impact and pressure experienced during use. The initial hardness of X120Mn12 is approximately 200 HB (Brinell hardness) and increases to around 500 HB as the material undergoes work hardening on the surface while maintaining a tough core. This unique property makes X120Mn12 easy to process using conventional methods such as plasma cutting or laser cutting.

Shearing is also possible with powerful machines, even for thicknesses up to 10 mm. Drilling can be performed using special cobalt-alloyed ultra-high-speed steel drill bits with a reinforced core. Despite its high carbon content, X120Mn12 offers good weldability and does not require preheating.

Applications of X120Mn12/1.3401 Steel Sheet
X120Mn12/1.3401 steel sheet is used in various industries and applications, including:

  • Explosive equipment construction
  • Safety technology (doors, coverings)
  • Safety structures
  • Wear parts for crushing equipment
  • Crushing jaw crushers
  • Bulk material handling
  • Processing and process engineering
  • Centrifuges and magnet structures

This steel sheet is ideal for demanding environments where high wear resistance and toughness are crucial.
