AR500 Steel: Properties, Benefits, Sizes & Applications

What is AR500 Steel?

AR500 steel is a high-carbon alloy steel designed for exceptional abrasion resistance, with a surface hardness ranging from 477 to 534 BHN. Compared to AR450 and AR400, AR500 steel offers superior impact and sliding abrasion resistance. However, this increased hardness makes AR500 steel less malleable.

AR500 Steel Plate Sizes

Steel Warehouse offers the following AR500 steel plates in various sizes:

  • 0.25″ to 0.315″ thickness, available in widths of 48″ to 65″, and cut to your desired length.
  • 0.375″ to 2.00″ thickness, available in standard sizes of 96″ x 240″ or 96″ x 288″.

Properties of AR500 Steel

AR500 steel is one of the most abrasion-resistant steels available. However, as the hardness increases, the steel becomes more rigid and less workable, making it harder to weld and form compared to other AR steels.

Key properties include:

  • Welding: Decent
  • Machining: Good
  • Abrasion Resistance: Excellent
  • Corrosion Resistance: Good
  • Forming: Fair

AR500 Steel Requirements

AR500 steel meets ASTM E10 standards for mechanical properties. It also complies with flatness and thickness requirements that are 50% of the specifications outlined in ASTM A-6. Special tolerances are available upon request.

Benefits of AR500 Steel

The primary advantage of AR500 steel is its ability to resist wear and abrasion, reducing downtime and improving equipment lifespan. This contributes to longer production cycles by minimizing erosion and wear.
